PHS Dress Code Policy  

Purpose General Guidelines Specific Standards Violations

 Purpose:The District's dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, instill discipline, prevent disruption, avoid safety hazards, and teach respect for authority.

 General Guidelines: Students shall be dressed and groomed in a manner that is clean and neat and that will not be a health or safety hazard to themselves or others. The District prohibits any clothing or grooming that in the administrator's judgment may reasonably be expected to cause disruption of or interference with normal school operations. The District prohibits pictures, emblems, or writing on clothing that:

1. Are lewd, offensive, vulgar, or obscene

2. Advertise or depict tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, drugs, or any other substance prohibited under FNCF (LEGAL)

3. Are suspected or known to represent gang attire. The determination of gang attire shall be made by the campus administrator. Each principal shall maintain and make available a current list of clothing prohibited under this provision.

 Specific Standards: The principal shall have the authority to determine whether a student is in compliance with the following standards.

1. See-through material shall not be acceptable in any garment unless the underlying garment meets the dress code.

2. Students shall be permitted to wear shoes with no backs so long as the shoes have heels.

3. Dark glasses shall not be permitted in class unless approved by the principal.

4. Hair Rollers shall be prohibited.

5. Boys shall be prohibited from wearing hair clips or hair pins.

6. Caps and hats shall not be worn in the halls, classrooms, cafeteria, office, or at assemblies and shall not be worn backwards at any time. Exceptions may be made for: safety reasons, medical reasons, religious reasons, or special occasions.

7. Boys shall not wear earrings.

8. Body piercing jewelry (e.g., rings or studs in the nose) shall be prohibited.

9. Possession of a bandana shall be prohibited.

10. Hair shall be kept clean and well-groomed and shall not be cut in patterns or shapes, e.g., no Mohawks, logos, symbols, manes, tails, words, and the like, and shall not be dyed unnatural colors.

11. Hair shall be no longer on the back and sides than the top of a shirt collar and shall be no longer in the front than the bottom of the eyebrows.

12. Belts and straps shall be fastened at all times; pants that have belt loops shall be worn with belts; belts shall not dangle.

13. Wallet chains shall be prohibited.

14. All apparel shall be hemmed.

15. Baggy pants, oversized pants, pants with oversized pockets, and pants worn low on the hip shall be prohibited.

16. The tails of all types of shirts shall be tucked into pants so that belt loops can be seen, except as otherwise provided in this policy. For students who are pregnant, this requirement shall apply only until maternity clothes are necessary.

17. Long vests, long or oversized coats, and any other outer garments that may pose a safety concern shall be removed while inside District buildings.

18. Tattoos shall be covered at all times

19. Eyebrows shall be free of etchings and designs.

20. All student attire shall be sized appropriately.

21. Bare midriffs shall not be prohibited; therefore, students shall not be allowed to wear crop tops without a longer shirt underneath.

22. Walking shorts shall be worn only as designed and shall not be permitted to be shorter than the fingertips of the student's hand when resting at his/her side.

23. Clothing with holes that reveal skin or undergarments shall not be permitted.

24. Skin-tight clothing, biker pants, swimsuits, surf pants, dance tights, leotards, tube tops, tank tops, and wetsuits shall not be permitted unless covered by clothing that conforms to the other requirements of the dress code.

25. Wigs shall not be permitted.

26. For female students: Dresses and blouses shall not have low front or back necklines and shall not expose undergarments.

27. For male students: All shirts shall be required to have sleeves.

28. For male students: Faces shall be clean-shaven; well-groomed sideburns shall be permitted, but shall reach no lower than the bottom of the ears.

29. For male students: Pants must be worn at or above the waist line.

 Violations: If the principal determines that a student's grooming violates the dress code, the student shall be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If the problem is not corrected, the student shall be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day or until the problem is corrected. A student whose clothing violates the dress code shall be assigned to in-school suspension either for the remainder of the day or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated dress code offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action. Appropriate discipline procedures shall be followed in all cases in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
