On August 8, 2024, the Palacios ISD Board of Trustees took action to hire Dr. Jared Duncum, as the Superintendent of Schools after complying with the Texas Education Code waiting period of 21 days.

Dr. Duncum was named the lone finalist for the position of Superintendent on July 18, 2024. Dr. Duncum will start in his new position as Superintendent on August 9, 2024. He has held the position of Interim Superintendent since June 4, 2024, after the resignation of former Superintendent, Dr. Bill Chapman.

Dr. Duncum has served as the District’s Assistant Superintendent since June 2022. Before coming to Palacios ISD, he served as the interim Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer at Sweetwater ISD. Dr. Duncum has served as a Principal and Assistant Principal, as well as a teacher at prior school districts.

Dr. Duncum received his Bachelor’s Degree in Agribusiness and Economics, a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Tarleton State University.

Dr. Duncum has indicated that his educational philosophy is student-focused and data-driven. “As an educator, my goal is to support campus administrators and teachers in preparing students to be successful in our classrooms, college courses, careers, and as members of the community.”

Board President, Karen Botbyl stated, “We appreciate the outstanding leadership that Dr. Duncum has provided both as our Assistant Superintendent, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and as the Interim Superintendent. Dr. Duncum’s leadership and commitment to Palacios ISD convinced the District that our intent should be to hire a Superintendent that would embrace the Board’s vision .” The Board conducted its own search to obtain applicants familiar with the community. The Board members voted unanimously to name Dr. Duncum as the lone finalist after considering those who applied. It was believed that Dr. Duncum’s experience and qualifications with Palacios ISD is evidence that he is extremely knowledgeable of and will continue to implement the District’s vision and goals.
